Tiberius Gracchus on the Road to Numantia, 2020, Oil on canvas
In the 19th century, the most important genre of painting was "History" painting - narrative images of historical, mythical and biblical events. I have long been interested in working in this genre. Popularis is a project depicting scenes from the collapse of the Roman Republic. The first part of this series focuses on Tiberius Gracchus. This controversial figure is traditionally identified as the person who sets in motion the series of events that ultimately, a century later, destroyed the Republic and made way for the Roman Empire. This subject was chosen because of close parallels I see between the events surrounding Tiberius Gracchus and the present day. This series invites the viewer to contemplate these parallels and their significance.
